Fire extinguishers play a vital role in minimizing the damages that a fire can cause. But it is equally important for us to look after it. Take proper care of the fire extinguishers and keep them regularly checked.

#1 Fire extinguisher cylinders should be refilled after every use

Fire extinguisher contains a pressurized gas that helps the extinguisher material to spread at a particular distance. To maintain this pressure and to ensure that it works correctly one must refill the cylinder if used – may it be a small quantity or mere leakage.

Always top-up what’s been used and be ready for the next time.

#2 Fire Extinguisher don’t last forever

They don’t last forever. This doesn’t mean that they don’t have an expiry date. But to keep your business, your employees and your customers safe you need to keep these fire extinguishers regularly checked.

#3 Different extinguishers are needed for different fire types

Just like we dress ourselves according to the occasion, a fire extinguisher should serve various fire types to save us from them.

There are 5 types of fire extinguishers that can take care of the various fire. They are :

  • Water extinguisher
  • Foam spray extinguisher
  • CO2 extinguisher
  • ABC Powder extinguisher
  • Wet chemical extinguisher

There are different types of fire too.

  • Ordinary Fire can be caused by wood, paper, and textiles.
  • Flammable liquid fire can be caused by grease, paints, and gasoline.
  • Fires caused by gases
  • Kitchen combustible caused by cooking oils, deep fat fryer, and leftover of oils
  • Electrical machines or appliances
  • Flammable metals

#4 All the Fire Extinguishers should be regularly maintained

Regular maintenance is very important when it comes to fire extinguishers because if you miss checking it and there’s a fire accident, it would be then you’ll know that fire extinguishers don’t work.

Precaution is better than cure they say.

This makes it really important to stick to a regular visual and physical inspection of fire extinguishers.

What is a visual inspection?

Visual inspection includes checking the pressure gauge and any wear and tear of the cylinder. Because if that is up to the mark, it’ll keep us safe.

These inspections should be carried out by someone who has proper knowledge about it. Also during the course of the visual inspection, the following things should be taken into consideration.

  1. Where is the fire extinguisher placed?
  2. Is it easy to access?
  3. The pin and the seal are in place.
  4. Any visual damage to any parts of the cylinders
  5. If there is any damage or if the nozzle is free?

What is a physical inspection?

Servicing your fire extinguisher just like your vehicle is equally important. It should be serviced once a year by an experienced and qualified person.

The following things are taken into consideration:

  1. The location, serial number, and type of fire extinguisher.
  2. Condition of fire extinguisher.

Once these inspections are done. The service person should inform you if there are any deficiencies and if it requires a remedy. They provide you with the certificate if things are alright and set to go.

#5 P.A.S.S should be followed when using a fire extinguisher cylinder


Every employee must be aware of these steps if they have a fire extinguisher cylinder.

Pull the pin from the extinguisher to activate.

Aim the extinguisher at the base of the fire

Squeeze the handle slowly

Sweep from side to side at the base of the fire.
